Children of the Cyborg Couture

Weijing Xiao

Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design Children of the Cyborg Couture by Weijing Xiao Children of the Cyborg is a nongendered couture piece investigating post pandemic femininity. Using jellyfish and its self reproducing ability as a metaphor, Weijing created this garment from only one piece of fabric through intricate cutting and draping method, and constructed airy and otherworldly silhouettes without elaborate understructures. This project challenged the notion of femininity in traditional couture, and translated Donna Haraway's fluid cyborg dream through an innovative approach to couture making. The piece was acquired by Cristobal Balenciaga Museum permanent collection.
